Nashville Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a great number of individuals with headaches in our Nashville office, and Sweeney Chiropractic has been able to support many of them. For that matter, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that half of all adults have a problem with some kind of headache condition, so this actually isn’t a surprise. One of the most prevalent types of headaches which our patients have problems with is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic can generally help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from issues in the cervical spine. It could be because of a condition with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be a result of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine results in squeezing or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can bring on headache pain.

How can you find out if the headache you are suffering from is a cervicogenic headache? Other than getting a diagnosis from a healthcare specialist, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes accompanied by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Headache Relief with Chiropractic

Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever issue is inducing them is corrected, it is important to get treatment instead of just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective solution, and one that provides a considerable amount of headache pain relief.

In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers looked at 80 people who had recurrent cervicogenic headaches. Half were given chiropractic care and the other half underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic offered the best results.

Specifically, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments provided patients enhanced pain relief and reduced the frequency of headaches that occurred. In addition to that, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
