Why Timing Matters

The Clock Starts At Impact

Research shows that untreated auto injuries are a leading cause of chronic pain that can last a decade or more. Here's what happens to your body — and your claim — depending on when you seek care.

Within 72 Hours — Ideal
Best chance at full recovery
Inflammation is caught early. Scar tissue formation can be prevented. Insurance documentation is clean and credible. Most patients recover fully with proper early care.
!
1–2 Weeks — Still Treatable
Scar tissue beginning to form
Soft tissue injuries are becoming more complex. Insurance adjusters may question the gap in care. Recovery is still possible, but the window for best outcomes is narrowing.
30+ Days — Chronic Risk
Chronic pain becomes likely
Research shows a significant percentage of rear-end collision victims still suffer pain and disability ten years later when care is delayed. Insurance claims are also harder to establish.
The Hidden Danger

You Might Feel Fine Right Now — and Still Be Injured

Adrenaline released during a crash can suppress pain signals for 24 to 72 hours. Many patients tell us they felt fine the day of the accident — and woke up 2 days later unable to turn their head.

This is one of the most dangerous patterns we see. By the time patients feel significant pain, the injury has already had time to worsen without treatment.

!
Up to 90% of auto injury patients report neck pain — often delayed in onset
!
Ligament damage from crashes may not show on X-rays, but is real and treatable
!
"Minor" collisions at low speeds can cause significant soft tissue injury
!
Delaying care can weaken your insurance claim — insurers note the gap

Don't Let Cost Stop You

Treatment Is Often $0 Out-of-Pocket

This is the thing most accident victims don't know — and insurance companies are counting on. Here's how it actually works.

🚗
At-Fault Driver's Insurance Pays
If another driver caused the accident, their liability insurance is responsible for your medical bills — including chiropractic care. You should not be paying out of pocket for injuries someone else caused.
🛡️
Your Own MedPay Coverage
Tennessee auto policies often include Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage that pays your treatment costs regardless of fault — even if you caused the accident. Many drivers have this and don't know it.
⚖️
Working With an Attorney?
Many patients involved in personal injury cases receive chiropractic treatment on a medical lien — meaning you pay nothing until your case settles. We can coordinate directly with your attorney's office.
📞
We Help You Navigate It

Common Auto Injuries We Treat

From Whiplash to Disc Injuries — We've Seen It All

Car accidents expose your body to violent forces it wasn't designed for. Here are the most common injuries Dr. Sweeney treats in Nashville auto accident patients.

🔄

Whiplash & Neck Injuries

The most common auto injury. During impact your head snaps forward and back, stretching and tearing neck ligaments and tendons. Up to 90% of auto accident patients experience neck symptoms. Early treatment prevents scar tissue and chronic stiffness.

🔻

Herniated & Bulging Discs

Crash forces compress the spine, causing discs to bulge or rupture. This leads to nerve compression, radiating pain, and numbness. Dr. Sweeney uses spinal decompression therapy alongside adjustments to treat disc injuries without surgery.

Nerve Compression & Sciatica

Disc damage or spinal misalignment from a crash can compress nerve roots, causing sharp, radiating pain down the arms or legs. Without proper treatment this can develop into chronic nerve pain that is far harder to resolve.

🧠

Headaches & Concussion

Post-accident headaches often originate from cervical spine misalignment, not just head impact. Chiropractic care addresses the structural root of post-accident headaches. We also help identify symptoms warranting further neurological evaluation.

🦴

Back & Lumbar Pain

Rear-end collisions compress the lumbar spine, injuring ligaments and nerves. This can cause acute pain immediately or develop into chronic low back problems over weeks. Early chiropractic care prevents scar tissue and restores normal movement.

💪

Shoulder & Upper Back Injuries

Seatbelt forces and impact can injure the shoulder, rotator cuff, and thoracic spine. Thoracic outlet syndrome — where nerves are compressed at the shoulder — is a common but often overlooked post-accident condition Dr. Sweeney treats.

Why Documentation Matters

Your Medical Records Are Your Case

Dr. Sweeney has nearly 40 years of experience not just treating auto injuries — but documenting them properly for insurance claims and legal proceedings. This is a critical and often overlooked part of your recovery.

01
Thorough Initial Examination
A detailed orthopedic and neurological exam establishes the medical link between your accident and your injuries — essential for any insurance or legal claim.
02
Objective Injury Documentation
We document range of motion deficits, neurological findings, and functional limitations — the objective evidence that supports your injury claim beyond your own reported pain.
03
Ongoing Progress Records
Every visit is documented. Your records tell the story of your injury and recovery in clinical language that insurance adjusters and attorneys can act on.
04
Imaging Referrals When Needed
When X-rays or MRIs are warranted, we provide referrals and coordinate with imaging centers — ensuring your injuries are fully captured on record.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Still unsure whether to come in?

Call us and ask. There's no pressure, no commitment — just an honest conversation about whether we can help you and what your next step should be.

📞 (615) 331-7040
I feel okay right now — do I still need to come in?
Yes — and this is critically important. Adrenaline released during a crash can suppress pain for 24–72 hours. Many patients feel fine the day of the accident and wake up the next day in significant pain. By that point, the injury has already gone untreated. Come in even if you feel okay — a proper examination will identify any underlying injuries before symptoms worsen.
How much will treatment cost me?
For many accident patients, treatment costs nothing out-of-pocket. If another driver caused the accident, their liability insurance covers your care. If you carry MedPay on your own Tennessee auto policy, that covers treatment regardless of fault. Some patients working with attorneys receive treatment on a medical lien — paying nothing until their case settles. Call us to discuss your specific situation.
How soon after the accident should I come in?
As soon as possible — ideally within 72 hours. The earlier you receive care, the better your odds of full recovery and the cleaner your insurance documentation will be. Research shows untreated whiplash injuries can cause chronic pain lasting ten or more years.
I already went to the ER after my accident. Do I still need chiropractic care?
Almost certainly yes. Emergency rooms are excellent at ruling out fractures, internal bleeding, and life-threatening injuries. They are not equipped to treat the soft tissue injuries — whiplash, disc injuries, ligament damage — that cause the vast majority of post-accident pain and disability. Chiropractic care addresses exactly those injuries that the ER did not treat.
Do you work with personal injury attorneys?
Yes. Dr. Sweeney has nearly 40 years of experience working alongside personal injury attorneys on auto accident cases. We provide thorough injury documentation, coordinate directly with your attorney's office, and in some cases can arrange treatment on a medical lien so you pay nothing until your case settles.
What types of auto injuries do you treat?
Dr. Sweeney treats the full range of motor vehicle accident injuries — whiplash and neck injuries, herniated and bulging discs, nerve compression, sciatica, post-accident headaches, low back injuries, shoulder injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, and more. We use chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression therapy, dry needling, and targeted rehabilitation exercises.
The accident was minor — is it worth coming in?
Absolutely. Research has shown that low-speed collisions — even at under 10 mph — can produce significant soft tissue injury. The size of the vehicle damage has little relationship to the severity of occupant injury. Don't dismiss a "minor" accident without getting evaluated.
