Nashville Chiropractic Beats Massage for Cervicogenic Headaches

We see a great number of individuals with headaches in our Nashville office, and Sweeney Chiropractic has been able to aid many of them. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that one half of all adults have difficulty with some type of headache disorder, so this certainly isn’t shocking. One of the most frequent types of headaches which our patients have problems with is cervicogenic headache which, happily, chiropractic can commonly help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that starts from issues in the cervical spine. It can be a result of a problem with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it can be caused by a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine produces compaction or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can give you headache pain.

How do you identify if the headache you are struggling with is a cervicogenic headache? Aside from obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps

Considering cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is causing them is remedied, it is vital to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that can provide a considerable amount of headache pain relief.

In one study printed in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers evaluated 80 people who had regular cervicogenic headaches. Half got chiropractic care and the other fifty percent underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was evaluated 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was found that chiropractic delivered the best outcomes.

In particular, this study found that chiropractic adjustments gave patients more significant pain relief and lowered the number of headaches that occurred. On top of that, it also reduced the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
