Nashville Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a lot of people with headaches in our Nashville office, and Sweeney Chiropractic has been able to assist many of them. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that half of all adults have difficulties with some type of headache problem, so this really isn’t unexpected. One of the most common types of headaches which our patients are afflicted with is cervicogenic headache which, fortunately, chiropractic can usually help.

Cervicogenic Headaches Defined

A cervicogenic headache is one that stems from an issue in the cervical spine. It can easily be attributable to a problem with either the spine itself (primarily, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it can be attributable to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine brings about squeezing or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can give you headache pain.

How do you know if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Other than being given a diagnosis from a healthcare professional, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally accompanied by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Headache Relief with Chiropractic

Because cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever issue is causing them is corrected, it is crucial to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that provides a considerable amount of headache pain relief.

In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers evaluated 80 people who had frequent cervicogenic headaches. Half got chiropractic care and the other half underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was found that chiropractic delivered the optimum effects.

In particular, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments provided patients enhanced pain relief and reduced the number of headaches that occurred. Furthermore, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
